LAASCAANOOD, SOOL REGION

Laascaanood, Sool REGION

Well done to the people of Sool region. Just keep moving forward

Laascaanood was fortunate enough to have escaped destruction during the conflicts in Somaliland in 1988/1991, making it one of the luckiest cities in the region. Although there have been some internal problems, changes, and displacements, the area is now progressing and gradually catching up with other regions in Somaliland. It is likely that Laascaanood will continue to develop and thrive in the future.

The Sool region is demonstrating remarkable competence and progress, outpacing other regions in terms of infrastructure development. The region has made significant strides in providing clean water, affordable electricity, schools, and hospitals between 2004 and 2019.

The Managing Director of Lascaanood government hospital, Fahiima Jaamac KOOSAFAARE, provided valuable insight into the impressive developments in the area. The region’s progress serves as a prime example of their remarkable achievements.

According to the former Minister of Health, Hon Haglotoosiye, the Sool Region was twenty years behind other regions in Somaliland due to the continuous conflicts in Lascaanood. These conflicts resulted in the loss of many lives and the destruction of what little infrastructure the region had previously possessed.

The significant developments in the Sool region were only possible because its people chose to cooperate with the Somaliland authorities. This highlights the importance of peace, as it enables progress to flourish without any obstacles. When individuals achieve internal harmony and tranquility, they can extend the same to their external environment, leading to a more peaceful and prosperous world.

It is to the credit of the people of Sool that the situation in Laascaanood has gradually improved year after year. It is apparent to anyone with a reasonable mind that there is a significant difference between the current situation in Laascaanood and the time when it was under the occupation of Somalia.

One could argue that Puntland has not done enough to improve security or address the issue of revenge killing and criminal activity in the Sool region. However, everything has since calmed down following the recapture of the region by the Somaliland government. It is fortunate that the situation has stabilized and people are no longer living in fear.

The Somaliland administration in Laascaanood took crucial steps to curb the incessant criminal activities and prevent revenge killings with the cooperation and willingness of the people of the Sool region. These efforts were much needed to restore peace and security to the area.

The Somaliland administration wasted no time in launching moderate development projects, such as allocating a significant budget for schools and the local Nugaal University in 2009. These initiatives were implemented rapidly and efficiently, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving the region.

Lasanod takes great pride in having two universities, a health institute, and numerous government and private schools. Additionally, in 2009, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) arrived in Laascaanood and initiated several projects in the area and its environs.

The level of development in areas such as healthcare, education, and the economy initially progressed slowly but steadily, as demonstrated in this particular clip.

In addition, businesses are thriving and expanding rapidly in Lascaanood and throughout the Sool region. As a result, the area attracts entrepreneurs and individuals from other regions of Somaliland who are committed to establishing businesses in Sool.

Numerous business owners from across the country have established thriving enterprises in Lasanod. Furthermore, significant advancements in residential development have also been observed in Lascaanood. Almost 99 percent of the diaspora communities are investing heavily in the real estate sector in the city and its environs, leading to a significant increase in land prices.

Laascaanood has made significant progress in infrastructure, including the construction of better roads than the capital city of Hargeisa, thanks to the efforts of the Somaliland Government. This has had a positive impact on the local economy. Additionally, in December of last year, the first Book Fair organized by the Somaliland Government was held in Lasanod, which was a major achievement.

I will leave the discussion of any further developments to my friend M.W. Boss, who recently visited Laascaanood. Congratulations to the people of Sool region for their progress and continued growth.
